Manchester City swept past Club Brugge 5-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday, reinforcing their standing as serious contenders for their first European title.

As Pep Guardiola's side bounced back from last month's setback to Paris Saint-Germain, Joao Cancelo gave City a merited lead on the half-hour and Riyad Mahrez converted a penalty shortly before the break.

Early in the second half, Kyle Walker added a third, while 19-year-old Cole Palmer scored his first Champions League goal just minutes after coming on as a replacement.

To the pleasure of the home fans, Hans Vanaken brought a goal back, but Mahrez finished a resounding City triumph with his second of the night.

The victory gives City six points after three games in Group A, with the English and Belgian champions meeting in Manchester in two weeks.
