Lille, the reigning French champions, lost 1-0 to promoted Clermont on Saturday, prompting the club's president to accuse the players of "individual and collective poverty."

Clermont-Vital Ferrand's N'Simba scored from 20 meters just after the half-hour mark, giving them their first win in eight games and denying Lille the chance to jump into the top three.

After watching his champions suffer their fourth league defeat in ten games under new coach Jocelyn Gourvennec, Lille president Olivier Letang had strong words.

"With individual and collective poverty you can't hope to compete at the top level," he said with Lille's title defence looking compromised as they sit eighth, 13 points behind runaway leaders Paris Saint-Germain.

"We hit the bottom, we were really bad," he said

Lille struggled without Burak Yilmaz, who was suspended, while top scorer Jonathan David, who returned late from World Cup qualifying duties with Canada, was limited to 20 minutes off the bench.
